Maliyamungu Gift Muhande is an artist and filmmaker. Her work often begins with something she cannot yet explain: an image that troubles her, a word that catches, a feeling for which she does not yet have language. She follows it until it becomes a question.

Fresco with natural pigments on woodWe were eating fruit all summer at Skowhegan, but never mangoes. I missed them. I began painting them from memory, thinking about growing up with mangoes and how impossible it was not to remember them once I noticed their absence.
Made at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, 2026, with guidance from Artist Instructors Oscar Rene Cornejo (fresco) and Erica Wessmann (sculpture/woodworking). Wood support chainsawn by Erica Wessmann under the artist’s direction.
